ShirtingFantasy and the "Hong Kong Ambrosi"

A reader from Singapore recent asked me,

"Where do you recommend to have pants made in Hong Kong? Who is the Hong Kong Ambrosi you talked about?".

Here it goes. I just picked up four pairs of bespoke pants today.

Kuroki twill (left) and Solbiati linen (right)

@shirtingfantasy was once nicknamed "Dr Cotton" by @michael_wk_car - not so much because of any real expertise, but rather because of an affinity for stuff that can be roughly handled and washed in water. Cotton shirting was obviously the low end of the thickness scale, while cotton denim and similarly robust Irish linen would be at the other end.

Solbiati and Solbiati. Both vintage lengths from Tessin.it

Then, of course, Solbiati is the only Italian linen that could come close to Irish linen - so much so that the mill has already been acquired by Loro Piana to weave exclusive and luxury yarn-dyed linen for the vertically-integrated mill-fashion group.

Kuroki denim, about 10.0 oz. Indigo dyed. the wash effect shall slowly unfold...

So four washable trousers, one maker. Who is Hong Kong Ambrosi?

This Hong Kong Ambrosi will be around Hong Kong today and tomorrow (3 Jun 2019 - 4 Jun 2019). As he still frequently travels between Hong Kong and Mainland China, to catch him here requires a bit of luck and patience. 😈

Until then, goodbye!

  2. Selvedge cotton twill made into side buckle trousers with pick stitching? A bit weird.
